Abstract

This study focuses on the factors that make the second semester students difficult in writing narrative paragraph at State Islamic College of Palangka Raya. Consequently, the purpose of the study was to investigate the factors that make the second semester students in writing narrative paragraph when they were studying English at classroom.
The study used qualitative-quantitative approach with a case study. From the result study could be answer descriptive question (what happen) to explain by doing at process study. In collecting the data, the researcher collected the data of observation based on the students activities, test, questioner, interview and documentation. Then, in analyzing the data by doing techniques of data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing. For the subjects of the study was the second semester students at taking writing II of English Education Study Program of STAIN Palangka Raya in academic year 2012/2013. Furthermore, the reseach findings as follows:
The factors that make the second semester students difficult in writing narrative paragraph of English Education Study Program of STAIN Palangka Raya in academic year 2012/2013. From 16 students that followed the writing test there were 11 students good scores. The high scores were 85 and poor score was 46. It could be concluded that students factors make the second semester students difficult in writing narrative paragraph it because the students less practising English writing at the time and nothing willingness to study repeatly. To put vocabulary they were difficult to alter the verb to be past tense or grammar, and also difficult to put period and comma. Between them were difficut in determining main idea, supporting sentence, developing sentence. Furthermore, the students having problems to formulate their own thoughts, organizing, and create a written record of them using the conventions of spelling and grammar. Based on finding the research and theory there were students factors difficult in writing were: switching tenses unnecessarily, excessively long paragraphs, inconsistency in spelling style, and incorrect capitalization. There were five students who got poor scores in following the test writing. In generally write a narrative paragraph was one of the abilities given knowledge to students from senior high school and level school in reality there were many students who have difficulties to write narrative paragraph correctly.

Penelitian ini terfokus pada faktor yang membuat mahasiswa semester II sulit dalam menulis narrative paragragraph di Sekolah tinggi Islam Negeri (STAIN) Palangka Raya. Oleh sebab itu, tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menyelidiki faktor yang membuat mahasiswa sulit dalam menulis narrative paragraph.
Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan qualitative-quantitative dalam studi kasus. Dari hasil penelitian dapat menjawab pertanyaan deskriptif (what happen) untuk menjelaskan dengan melakukan pada proses penelitian. Dalam mengumpulkan data, peneliti mengumpulkan data observasi yang berdasarkan pada aktivitas siswa, test, questioner, wawancara dan dokumentasi. Kemudian, dalam menganalisa data dilakukan dengan teknik analisa data adalah data reduksi, data display, penyajian data/verifikasi data. Subjek penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa semester II di Sekolah Tinggi Islam Negeri (STAIN) Palangka Raya. Hasil penelitian yang diperoleh menunjukkan hal sebagai berikut:
Dari 16 siswa yang mengikuti tes menulis Yang mendapatkan nilai tertinggi siswa adalah 85 dan nilai terendah siswa adalah 46. Dapat disimpulkan faktor yang membuat mahasiswa semester II Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Program STAIN Palangka Raya angkatan 2012/2013 yaitu; mereka tidak bisa menulis narrative paragraph dikarenakan kurangnya latihan menulis tiap waktu dan tidak ada kemauan untuk belajar mengulang. Antara mereka sulit menentukan ide utama, kalimat pendukung, pengembangan kalimat, penggunaan kata kerja dan kurangnya kosa kata. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa mahasiswa mempunyai masalah untuk mompurmulasikan pikiran mereka sendiri, mengorganisasikan dan menciptakan suatu rekaman tulisan mereka menggunakan pengejaan dan susunan kata. Berdasarkan hasil penemuan penelitian dan teori ada beberapa faktor yang membuat siswa sulit menulis narrative paragraph yaitu switching tenses unnecessarily, excessively long paragraphs, inconsistency in spelling style, and incorrect capitalization. Ada 5 siswa yang mendapatkan nilai rendah dalam mengikuti tes menulis. Pada umumnya, menulis narrative adalah salah satu kemampuan yang diberikan pengetahuan kepada siswa dari SMA dan level sekolah atas. Faktanya ada beberapa siswa yang punya kesulitan untuk menulis narrative paragraph dengan benar.
