Abstract

This study aimed to measure the correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and writing ability. This study was conducted at SMP Muhammadiyah Palangka Raya academic year 2016-2017. The sample of this study consisted of 44 students’ of Eighth grade which taken from two classes.

The writer used quantitative approach in finding out the answer of the problem of the study, technique of the data collection used test. The design of the study was correlation design where the writer used non-experiment. The sample of study was determined using random sampling technique. The writer gave vocabulary and writing test to the class.

The result of data analysis showed that there was correlation between English vocabulary mastery and writing students’ ability at SMP Muhammadiyah Palangka Raya. It meant Ha was accepted and H0 was rejected. It can be seen from the data calculated using correlation “r” product moment formula. The value correlation “r” product moment was consulted with “r” table which df = 42. Significant standard 5% = 0.304. Manual calculation found that the correlation “r” product moment was higher than the value of “r” table of product moment at 5% significance level or 0.420 > 0.304. Then, the data was calculated using correlation index used SPSS 18 program was 0.420 or r = 0.420 > 0.304 at significance standard 5%, it means that the result of the present study there was moderate correlation between vocabulary mastery and writing ability.

Based on the finding above, it can be suggested that: (1) the student’s should improve their mastery in vocabulary and ability in writing, (2) to improve the student’s understanding, the English teacher should give more explanation about how to memorize vocabulary because by having many vocabulary the students’ can easily get information and fun story written in English, and (3) future researchers are expected to develop other additional this study with different topic, sample and graders.

ABSTRAK

Penilitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui hubungan antara penguasaan kosa kata siswa dan kemampuan menulis. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan di SMP Muhammadiyah Palangka Raya tahun pelajaran 2016-2017. Sampel dari penelitian ini berjumlah 44 siswa kelas VIII yang terdiri dari dua kelas.

Dalam penelitian ini, penulis menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif untuk menemukan jawaban dari penelitian, teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan tes. Jenis penilitian ini menggunakan korelasi desain, penulis menggunakan non-experiment. Penentuan sampel dengan menggunakan teknik sampel acak. Penulis memberikan tes menulis dan kosa kata kepada siswa.

Hasil data menunjukkan bahwa ada hubungan antara penguasaan kosa kata siswa dan kemampuan menulis pada siswa di SMP Muhammadiyah Palangka Raya. Itu artinya Ha diterima dan H0 ditolak. Hasil tersebut dapat dilihat dari penghitungan yang menggunakan rumus “r” product moment. Hasil hitungan “r” product moment dibandingkan dengan “r” tabell yang mana df nya adalah 42. Taraf standar signifikansi adalah 5% = 0.304. Pada penghitungan manual ditemukan bahwa “r” product moment lebih tinggi dari nilai “r” tabel di signifikansi 5% atau 0.420 > 0.304. Kemudian data dihitung menggunakan “r” product moment program SPSS 18, hasilnya adalah nilai “r” product moment lebih tinggi dari “r” tabel pada taraf signifikansi 5% atau r = 0.420 > 0.304, ini menunjukan hasil bahwa adanya hubungan cukup/ sedang antara penguasaan kosa kata siswa dan kemampuan menulis.

Berdasarkan penelitian, dapat disarankan bahwa: (1) seharusnya siswa meningkatkan penguasaan kosa kata dan kemampuan pada menulis mereka, (2) untuk meningkatkan pemahaman siswa, guru seharusnya memberikan penjelasan lebih untuk menghafal kosa kata, karena dengan mempunyai banyak kosakata akan mempermudah siswa mendapat informasi dan menyenangkan dalam menulis bahasa inggris, dan (3) peneliti selanjutnya diharapkan untuk mengembangkan penelitian ini dengan topik, sampel dan kelas yang berbeda.
