Abstract

This research is about the correlation between students’ mastery of simple past tense and their ability in writing anecdote at the eight grade of MTsN 2 Palangkaraya in academic year 2016/2017.

The research was done because of students’ problem in writing ability, and it was limited in anecdote text. The objective of the study where to find out simple past tense mastery, writing ability in anecdote text and wheter there was any correation between simple past tense mastery and writing ability in anecdote text. The hypothesis of researcher was; Ha: there is correlation between students’ mastery of simple past tense and their ability in anecdote text, and Ho: There is no correlation between students’ mastery of simple past tense and their ability in writing anecdote.

The research was a quantitative research. The population of the study were 288 students of the eight grade of MTsN 2 Palangkaraya. The instrument used was a test. The researcher gave grammar text and writing test. Type of grammar test was multiple choice and writing test was essay test which asked students to make sentence into paragraph.

The total score of simple past tense test (Variable X) = 3536 and the total score of Writing test (Variable Y) = 4239.5 and the calculation of two variables was 249873. It was calculated by using Pearson product moment and the result the data of analysis the data shows that the correlation coefficient between variable X and variable Y was 0.987 while the significance standard 5% was rtable = 0,304, so rxy < rtable (0,987 > 0,304). the significance standard 1% was rtable = 0,393, so rxy > rtable (0,987 < 0,393). The criteria of correlation between two variables was 0,420 there was average correlation. Then, the score of KP (determinat coefficient score) or contribution of variable X and Variable Y was 97.4169%. It concluded that Grammar mastery gave contributes 97.4169%. to writing ability produced by students of the eighth grade students MTsN 2 Palangka Raya.

The data shows that Tvalue was higher than rtable. So, it proved that Ha stated there was correlation between variable X and variable Y (Ha was accepted) and Ho stated there was no correlation between variable X and variable Y (Ho was rejected).
