Abstract

The study is aimed to find out the effectiveness of using crossword puzzle in teaching vocabulary at eleventh grade students of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Palangka Raya.
The study included quantitative paradigm with experimental design. It was designed the lesson plan, conducted the treatment, and observed the students’ scores by pre-test and post-test. The population of the study is the eleventh grade students of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Palangka Raya which consist of four classes. The writer chose XI IPA 1 and XI IPA 2 as sample. The sample was determined using cluster sampling.

After getting the data from pretest and posttest, they were analyzed using t_test formula to test the hypothesis stated. Based on the result of analysis, it was found that the value of tobserved = -11.271 and ttable = 2.02. It showed that the tobserved was higher than ttable. The result of testing hypothesis determined that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) stating that there is a significant difference between using crossword puzzle can be used to stimulate the students to increase their English vocabulary was accepted and null hypothesis (Ho) stating that using crossword puzzle can not be use to stimulate the students to increase their English vocabulary was rejected

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menemukan keefektifan penggunaan teka-teki silang dalam pengajaran kosa kata pada murid kelas sebelas di SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Palangka Raya.
Penelitian ini termasuk penelitian kuantitatif dengan desain eksperimental. Penulis menyusun rencana pembelajaran, memberikan perakuan dan melakukan penelitian tes siswa dengan pra-uji dan pasca-uji. Populasi dari studi ini adalah murid kelas XI SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Palangka Raya yang terdiri dari empat kelas. Kemudian peniliti memilih kesa XI IPA1 dan XI IPA 2 sebagai sampel dengan menggunakan teknik cluster random sampling.
Setelah mendapatkan data dari pra-uji dan pasca-uji, data tersebut dianalisis menggunakan rumus t_test untuk menguji hipotesis yang telah ditetapkan. Berdasarkan hasil analisis ditemukan bahwa nilai dari tobserved =-11.271 dan ttable= 2.02. hasil dari data analisis menunjukan bahwa tobserved = -11.271 lebih tinggi daripada ttable= 2.02. hasil dari pengujian hipotesis menetukan bahwa hipotesis alternative (Ha) yang menyatakan bahwa terjadi perbedaan secara signifikan antara penggunaan teka-teki silang dapat digunakan untuk mendorong murid untuk meningkatkan kosa kata bahasa inggris telah diterima dan hipotesis nihil (Ho) yang menyatakan bahwa penggunaan teka-teki silang tidak dapat digunakan untuk mendorong murid untuk meningkatkan kosa kata bahasa inggris telah ditolak
