Abstract

ABSTRACT

The aim of the research was to find out: 1) The correlation between vocabulary learning strategies and vocabulary size of fourth semester students of English department of IAIN Palangkaraya academic year 2013. 2) The English vocabulary learning strategies mostly adopted by fourth semester students of English department of IAIN Palangkaraya academic year 2013. The research was conducts in IAIN Palangkaraya.
The subjects of this study are the fourth semester students of English department of IAIN Palangkaraya academic year 2013. This study was focus to find out the correlation between vocabulary learning strategies and vocabulary size of fourth semester students of English department of IAIN Palangkaraya academic year 2013. There are many kinds of vocabularies, but the writer limited kinds of vocabularies tested in this research were academic vocabularies. English department students of IAIN Palangkaraya were pursued mastery English. Vocabulary is the most important element in language learning. Of course, the students have kinds of vocabulary learning strategies to enrich their vocabulary. Based on those reasons, the writer was interested to investigated the the correlation between vocabulary learning strategies and vocabulary size of the fourth semester students of English department of IAIN Palangkaraya academic year 2013.

The research type was quantitative. In collecting the data, the writer used questionnaire and test. The population of the study were the fourth semester students of English department of IAIN Palangkaraya academic year 2013. The Method of sampling in this study was total sampling. Because number of the students less than one hundred, so the total number of population will be used as the sample. The technique of collecting data of vocabulary size was test method. The technique of collecting data of vocabulary learning strategies by questionnaire method. The technique of data analysis used the Pearson product moment correlation.

The research findings show that there is no correlation between vocabulary learning strategies and vocabulary size of the fourth semester students of English department of IAIN Palangkaraya academic year 2013 (rxy = - 0.25 < r table = 0.254). So, the null hypothesis (H0) of the research is accepted and alternative hypothesis (Hα) is rejected. The meaning of this statement is the students’ vocabulary strategies did not has relationship or influence to students’ vocabulary size.

ABSTRAK

Tujuan utama penelitian ini adalah sebagai berikut: 1) korelasi antara strategi pembelajaran vocabulary dan jumlah perbendaharaan vocabulary mahasiswa semester empat prodi bahasa Inggris IAIN Palangka Raya tahun akademik 2013. 2) strategi pembelajaran vocabulary yang paling banyak diadobsi oleh mahasiswa semester empat prodi bahasa Inggris IAIN Palangka Raya tahun akademik 2013. Penelitian ini diadakan di IAIN Palangkaraya. Subjek penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa semester empat prodi bahasa Inggris IAIN Palangka Raya tahun akademik 2013. Penelitian ini berfokus untuk menemukan korelasi antara strategi pembelajaran vocabulary dan jumlah perbendaharaan vocabulary mahasiswa semester empat prodi bahasa Inggris IAIN Palangka Raya tahun akademik 2013. Ada banyak tipe vocabulary, tapi penulis membatasi vocabulary yang diujikan dalam penelitian ini adalah akademik vocabulary. Mahasiswa IAIN prodi bahasa inggris dituntut untuk bisa menguasai bahasa inggris. Vocabulary adalah elemen penting dalam belajar bahasa. Tentunya para mahasiswa memiliki macam-macam starategi pembelajaran vocabulary guna memperkaya perbendaharaan vocabulary yang mereka miliki.
Berdasarkan alasan tersebut, peneliti tertarik untuk meneliti korelasi antara stategi pembelajaran vocabulary mahasiswa dan jumlah pembendaharaan vocabulary mahasiswa semester empat prodi bahasa Inggris IAIN Palangka Raya tahun akademik 2013.

Pendekatan yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah penelitian Kuantitatif. Jenis penelitian ini adalah penelitian korelasi. Metode pemilihan sampel dalam penelitian ini adaalah sampel total. Karena jumlah mahasiswa yang diteliti kurang dari seratus maka keseluruhan jumlah populasi digunakan sebagai sampel. Tehnik mengumpulkan data perbendaharaan vocabulary menggunakan metode tes. Tehnik mengumpulkan data strategi pembelajaran vocabulary menggunakan metode angket. Tehnik dalam menganalisis data menggunakan rumus korelasi ppm.

Adapun hasil dari penelitian ini adalah tidak terdapat korelasi antara strategi pembelajaran vocabulary dan jumlah perbendaharaan vocabulary mahasiswa prodi bahasa Inggris IAIN Palangka Raya tahun angkatan 2013 (rxy = - 0.25 < r table = 0.254). Jadi, null hypothesis (H0) dari penelitian ini diterima dan alternative hypothesis (Hα) ditolak. Hal ini berarti bahwa strategi pembelajaran vocabulary siswa tidak terlalu mempengaruhi perbendaharaan kata para siswa tersebut.
