Abstract

The existence of tradition has a strong belief in society because it has been passed down from generation to generation. Even though many traditions are now being abandoned due to modernity and globalization, there are still residents who are trying to maintain the existence of these traditions. One of the traditions that are still being preserved by the community is the weh-wehan tradition in Kaliwungu, Kendal, which is the commemoration of the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad SAW. every 12th of Rabi'ul Awal. The purpose of writing this article is to understand the meaning of the weh-wehan tradition in maintaining peace among residents in Kaliwungu, Kendal. Peace is one of the main things in human life which will bring calm and harmony in interacting with each other. In addition, peace also provides an opportunity for humans to build a better civilization than before. Meanwhile, the research data was obtained through in-depth interviews with Halim as Lebe and then analyzed descriptively using Soedjatmoko's theory of peace. The results of this study are: (1) The weh-wehan tradition invites residents to be sensitive to the condition of the community through being fond of giving alms; (2) Prohibition to discriminate against existing differences; (3) An appeal to
strengthen brotherhood among citizens and respect elders; and (4) Awareness of human equality.
