Abstract

Covid-19 has been confirmed as a national disaster. This virus causes not only health world crisis but also other sectors in a country such as education. The educational process in Indonesia all brought into online learning during Covid-19 to stop spreading the virus using the rapid development of technology. Because of that, the teachers face challenges in conducting online teaching. In addition, to conduct online learning in remote areas need more preparation because of the inadequate facilities in remote areas. So that, the challenges of secondary school English teachers in remote areas toward online learning during Covid-19 pandemic have to take into deep consideration.

This study was aimed at investigating the challenges of secondary school English teachers in remote areas toward online teaching, to describe how the secondary school English teacher in remote areas conduct online teaching, and to identify the way the secondary school English teacher solve the challenges toward online teaching during Covid-19 pandemic.

This study was a case study with qualitative approach. Three instruments were used to collect the data, those are: open-ended questionnaire, interview and documentation. The subjects of this study were the secondary school English teacher in remote areas of Palangka Raya. They were determined by purposive sampling technique based on some criteria needed.

As a result, this study showed that there were eight challenges experienced by the secondary school English teachers in remote areas toward online teaching during Covid-19 pandemic, those are: (1) inadequate infrastructure; (2) student’s learning attention; (3) financial condition; (4) students readiness; (5) parent’s concern; (6) designing materials; (7) measuring student’s understanding, and (8) the instability of student’s motivation. In carrying out an online learning in remote areas, most of the teacher used more than one learning application or platform. They used one learning application or platform as the main learning application where almost all the activities of online learning done there and the other application as the supporting learning application. The secondary school English teachers mostly used the additional learning application for collecting the student’s task and conducting an examination. During teaching process, there were various way in overcoming the challenges done by the secondary school English teachers, they were: (1) create an interactive media; (2) decide the most.suitable online learning tool; (3) give additional time for the students; (4) provide adequate facilities for both teacher and student in remote areas.

Abstract

Covid-19 telah dikonfirmasi sebagai bencana alam. Virus ini tidak hanya menyebabkan krisis dalan dunia kesehatan tetapi juga pada sektor lain dalam sebuah negara seperti sektor pendidikan. Proses pendidikan di Indonesia telah berubah menjadi pembelajaran daring selama pandemi Covid-19 untuk menghentikan penyebaran virus dengan memanfaatkan kemajuan pesat teknologi. Karena itu, guru menghadapi tantangan dalam melaksanakan pengajaran daring. Serta untuk melaksanakan pembelajaran dari di daerah terpencil membutuhkan persiapan yang matang karena kurangnya fasilitas yang tersedia di daerah terpencil. Oleh karena itu, tantangan guru Bahasa inggris sekolah menengah di daerah terpencil dalam pengajaran dari selama pandemi Covid-19 harus sangat diperhatikan.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menginvestigasi tantangan guru Bahasa inggris sekolah menengah di daerah terpencil terkait pengajaran daring, menjabarkan bagaimana guru Bahasa Inggris sekolah menengah di daerah terpencil melaksanakan pembelajaran daring, dan mengidentifikasi cara guru bahasa Inggris sekolah menengah dalam mengatasi tantangan terkait pengajaran daring selama pandemic Covid-19.

Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian studi kasus dengan menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif. Penelitian ini menggunakan tiga instrumen untuk mengumpulkan data, yakni: angket, wawancara dan dokumentasi. Adapun subjek dalam penelitian ini merupakan guru Bahasa Inggris sekolah menengah di daerah terpencil kota Palangka Raya. Subjek-subjek tersebut ditentukan melalui teknik pengambilan sampel purposive berdasarkan kriteria yang dibutuhkan.

Sesuai dengan hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa ada delapan tantangan yang dihadapi oleh guru Bahasa Inggris sekolah menengah di daerah terpencil terkait pengajaran daring selama pandemi Covid-19, yakni: (1) fasilitas yang kurang memadai; (2) rendahnya kesadaran siswa; (3) kondisi finansial; (4) rendahnya literasi siswa; (5) kepedulian orang tua; (6) pembuatan materi; (7) mengukur pemahaman siswa dan (8) kurang stabilnya motivasi siswa. Dalam melaksanakan pembelajaran daring, hampir semua guru menggunakan lebih dari satu aplikasi maupun platform pembelajaran. Mereka menggunakan satu aplikasi atau platform pembelajaran pokok dimana hampir seluruh kegiatan pembelajaran daring dilaksanakan menggunakan aplikasi tersebut dan aplikasi atau platform pembelajaran tambahan lainnya yang biasanya digunakan untuk mengumpulkan tugas siswa dan melaksanakan ujian. Dalam proses mengajar, ada berbagai cara yang digunakan untuk mengatasi tantangan-tangan oleh guru Bahasa Inggris sekolah menengah, yaitu: (1) membuat media yang menarik; (2) menentukan alat pembelajaran online yang paling cocok digunakan; (3) memberikan waktu tambahan untuk siswa; (4) menyediakan fasilitas yang memadai untuk guru dan siswa di daerah terpencil.
