Abstract

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to (1) finding out the five types of English phrases used in lyrics of Bruno Mars’ songs were analyzed using graphic box (2) finding out the dominant of English phrases used in lyrics of Bruno Mars’ songs (3) determing the formation and meaning of English phrase used in lyrics of Bruno Mars song.

This study used qualitative design and the type of qualitative design used in this study is content analysis which applied to written or visual materials. Documentation technique was used as the data collection procedure.This studyfocusto identify fivetypes ofEnglish phrasesnamelynoun phrase, verb phrase, adjectivephrase, adverbphraseandprepositionalphrases. All these type were found in seven song lyrics belongs to Bruno Mars, where the six song lyrics were chosen in Doo Wops Hooligans album released in 2010 and one song lyric released in 2011. Five types of phrase were found thatwas used agraphicbox which has fivecriteriaand it must be consideredin apply it.

Based onthe result analysis, it was found thatthe five types of English phrases are noun phraseused in themajority ofthe sevensong lyrics ofBrunoMarswiththe resultreached46.2%. Whereas verbphrase wasfoundwith the result of31%, adjectivephrasewith the result of5.7%, adverbphrasewith the result of8.8%, and the last was prepositionalphrasewith the result of8.2%.These context of sevensongs belongBrunoMars wasrepresentsome matters that relate with thereal lifenamelyabout lovewith a woman, friendshipand also relate withanger, hatred, disappointmentor despair. There was also the content of the songs concerned with the development of meaning like metonymy, methapor, idiom and socio-culture meaning. Therefore, this study is recommended to the teacher to be more creative and innovative in applying media that can get the students’ interest.
